Southern Rust Alert for North Carolina Corn Growers – Yes, Again in 2015!
From Dr. Ron Heiniger-

Agricultural Professionals:

We are seeing another early outbreak of Southern Rust in corn in North Carolina in 2015. We went through this last year. Only good news is that this is at least a week later than the outbreak in 2015. As you know from last year the fight against Southern Rust is a race between the rust infecting most of the leaves of corn before R5 and the crop reaching the R5 stage with the leaves clean. I have attached an updated recommendation guide sheet. Use this to discuss what growers need to do to protect their crop. What we saw last year was the disease was not as agressive as it was in prior years and that early treatments slowed the spread considerably (one grower documented a 40 bu per acre advantage from a fungicide application at first sign of the disease). I hope this is the case again this year.

So far we have found Southern Rust in two fields. One in Lenior County at the Pioneer Research Station and another in Hyde County. Unfortunately, these fields are in the middle of the eastern part of the state and this tells me that most likely we have some more fields that have Southern Rust in the Tidewater and Coastal Plain that just aren’t scouted as often and therefore the disease has gone unnoticed.

The issue now is to get out and do some scouting and see how widespread this is.
