Cutoff Dates for Paraquat Sprays

Paraquat must be applied within 28 days after emergence to be in compliance with product labels, to prevent negative impact on peanut yield, and in most cases to optimize weed control. Assuming it takes 7 days in general for peanuts to emerge (longer for early May plantings and possibly shorter for mid-June plantings), here are cutoff dates based on when peanuts are planted and emergence is estimated:

May 1 plant, May 15 emerge, last paraquat date June 12

May 10 plant, May 20 emerge, last paraquat date June 18

May 20 plant, May 27 emerge, last paraquat date June 25

June 1 plant, June 7 emerge, last paraquat date July 5

June 10 plant, June 15 emerge, last paraquat date July 13

June 20 plant, June 25 emerge, last paraquat date July 23

In research from years ago with planting dates, as long as paraquat was applied within the 28 days after emergence, yield was not adversely affected regardless of planting date. Always apply paraquat with 8 oz/acre Basagran. Applying this treatment sooner rather than later (within 21 days after emergence) is often more effective for weed control and less risky in terms of crop safety.
