The Catawba County Cooperative Extension Row Crops Program provides technical support and educational training for commercial farmers of traditional row crops such as corn, soybean, small grains. As well as alternative row crops such as hemp, canola, sorghum, and others.

Our row crops agent, Dr. George Place, also provides consultation for commercial vegetable producers, pond weeds, biotic and abiotic problem diagnostics and management, weed identification, soil management, and general agronomy. We provide consultation to farmers with field visits, problem diagnostics, and field sampling for laboratory analysis.

Program Vision: to provide row crop producers with the information and technical training that they need to improve farm profitability.

Program Goal: to provide educational and technical assistance to farmers based on their production needs.

Pesticides

Paraquat training is now required for applications containing products with a 2019 or later label. Trade names include, but may not be limited to the following – Gramoxone Extra, Parashot, Parazone, Quick Quat, Firestorm, or Helmquat. Anybody who applies, mixes, or handles paraquat must be a certified applicator (holder of their own license). One person can’t work under another person’s license. Training is two part. You must visit this website, enroll as a guest, when it asks for a password, type in Paraquat, with a capital P, listen to a 45 minute presentation and complete a final quiz. To pass, you must get 100% of the questions correct. You can take the quiz as many times as needed. Once you pass the quiz, you can print off a certificate that shows you have successfully received training. Training will be required every three years.

Auxin Herbicide Training is required for all persons planning to apply dicamba (Engenia, FeXapan, or XtendiMax) to Xtend cotton or soybeans or 2,4-D (Enlist Duo or Enlist One) to Enlist cotton or soybeans. Take a look at the 2020 full schedule of training sessions around the state. 1 CEU for pesticide licenses N, D, O, X will also be given.

For Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), the most effective fungicides are Prosaro, Caramba, Proline, and Miravis Ace. Fungicides containing strobilurins may increase the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), and those fungicides should not be used after flag leaf in case of an FHB epidemic. Use the Fusarium Risk Assessment Tool to help you decide if spraying a fungicide is the best decision.

Additional Resources For Row Crop Production

NC FarmLink: The mission of NC FarmLink is to connect farmers with land to farm. A robust database allows users to have their own account. Farm seekers can develop a profile that can be viewed by farm owners and land owners seeking to find someone to buy, lease, or work on their farm. Farm owners and and landowners can develop property profiles to describe the land they want to sell, lease, or have someone come to work on their farm.
